PEZ candy was invented in 1927, the Austrian food company executive named Edward Haas III. The original candy, basically a compressed tablet of sugar flavored with peppermint oil, was marketed as an alternative to smoking. The name came first letter in the middle and the last of the German word for peppermint:

Originally, PEZ came in small boxes, but in 1948, Haas introduces the company’s first PEZ dispenser. The original distributor was designed to resemble a cigarette lighter to appeal to the target market of adult smokers.
